No single source will provide capital covering all aspects of the work. The Architectural Heritage Fund plays a key role for the early stages, and the Heritage Lottery has range of grant schemes. Both require balancing funding for which there are a wide range of sources. The Heritage Funding Directory and the Institute of Fund Raising both keep catalogues. At a local level, Staffordshire Moorlands District Council sometimes has small sums available, but both the SMDC and the County Council are severely limited in the help they can give. Some sources are restricted to buildings that are Listed Grade I or Grade II*. Competition is high and most funders have clear-cut ideas on what they will or will not fund at any given moment, and apply strict conditions to ensure good quality work and value for money.

Both the above require balancing funding of between 5% and 50%. There are a wide range of further sources to be explored for this.

Some Buildings Trusts cover a wide area, others were set up to create a future for a single building. Most are members of the Association of Preservation Trusts. This recently widened its brief to include other charities working with historic buildings and was renamed the Heritage Trust Network

The Heritage Trust Network provides specialist training days, and on-line advice. It is closely linked to the Architectural Heritage Fund which provides funding for the early stages of a project. Funding for both came originally from government sources.
