MISSION STATEMENT OF Leek & moorlands historic buildings trust

The object of the Leek and Moorlands Historic Buildings Trust is to preserve, for the people of Staffordshire Moorlands and the Nation at large, the buildings and areas of historic and architectural interest within the Staffordshire Moorlands.

To identify and record buildings of historical and architectural interest in the Staffordshire Moorlands. If required, to provide their owners with advice on appropriate/ suitable repair or restoration, and to help, or guide them, where appropriate, with grants that may be available to help support this work.

ABOUT LMHBT

Leek and Moorlands Historic Buildings Trust was established in 1995 to support the local conservation department in their efforts to secure the future of historic buildings in the Staffordshire Moorlands that were deemed to be ‘at risk’.

BUILDING TRUSTS

Buildings Trusts exist to further the restoration and re-use of historic buildings, primarily those that are Listed or in Conservation Areas. Listed Buildings are those deemed to be of national architectural or historical interest.

FUNDING SOURCES

No single source will provide capital covering all aspects of the work. The Architectural Heritage Fund plays a key role for the early stages, and the Heritage Lottery has range of grant schemes.

PAST PROJECTS

Since its foundation in 1995 Leek and Moorlands Historic Buildings Trust has supported a number of projects in the following ways:
Working in partnership with other organisations to stimulate action.
Providing volunteers or advice for a range of heritage related projects.

Partnerships have involved St. Edward’s Church, Leek; Moorlands Housing; Parish Councils; the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds; Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, and commercial developers. Community support has been received from JCB, Leek U3A, St. Leonard’s School at Ipstones, the Seven Trent Waterboard, and Tarmac.

Volunteers took part in English Heritage’s Heritage at Risk project; checked the proposed development sites in advance of the Staffordshire Moorlands District Council’s Local Plan, and is currently helping to create a Local Heritage list.
